E10 or alkylate petrol in your boat engine? Choose by the manual and oil system

E10 approval is model-specific. Distinguish between ethanol content, octane rating and two-stroke oil before choosing pump petrol or alkylate petrol.

E10 may work – but don't assume it

Mercury states that its current petrol engines can handle at most 10 percent ethanol, i.e. E10. Suzuki's manual for the DF15A/DF20A also allows at most 10 percent. This is not a general approval for all older marine engines, hoses or tanks. Check the exact manual for your engine and the compatibility of the entire fuel system before switching fuel.

Alkylate petrol can be an alternative if the product meets the engine's fuel requirements. Also make sure you use the right oil setup for the engine – four-stroke, premix or separate two-stroke oil injection.

Three things to check

PropertyWhy it matters
Ethanol contentMust be within the limit for the engine and fuel system.
Octane ratingMust at least meet the manual's requirement, using the correct rating system.
Oil mixingMust match the engine's lubrication system and specified oil grade.

The Suzuki manual mentioned specifies at least 91 RON and no more than 10 percent ethanol. That is an example from one manual, not a common minimum for all engines. US manuals may use a different octane measure than Swedish pumps. Read the full specification, not just the number.

Alkylate petrol is not automatically ready-to-use marine engine fuel

Aspen describes Aspen 4 as alkylate petrol for four-stroke engines and Aspen 2 as a premixed fuel with 2 percent oil for air-cooled two-stroke engines. So Aspen 2 should not be chosen for a water-cooled outboard just because it is also a two-stroke. The engine's requirements for oil quality and mixing ratio are what count.

An engine with a separate oil tank should normally be lubricated through the dedicated system, as specified in the manual. Don't add oil on your own initiative. If you're unsure, ask the engine manufacturer or an authorised dealer to confirm the product choice.

Ethanol, water and winter storage

Mercury explains that ethanol-blended fuel can absorb water and that phase separation can leave water/ethanol at the bottom of the tank and degrade the remaining fuel. An additive is not a reliable way to restore fuel that is already contaminated. Have the tank and fuel system checked if the engine starts running poorly or there is water in the filter.

Follow the storage instructions for your model: the right approach depends on things like the tank system. Read about winter storage. Fresh petrol and a clean filter matter more than buying an additive without a clear plan.

How to choose without guesswork

  1. Find the model, serial number and correct manual via the engine catalogue.
  2. Note the ethanol limit, octane requirement and oil requirement.
  3. On an older installation, check the tank, hoses, fittings and filters separately.
  4. Compare the fuel's product data sheet, not just the colour of the can.
  5. Record what you fill up with and follow up on any change in running or leaks.

Also work out the actual trip cost with the fuel tool. More expensive fuel does not automatically mean lower consumption, and a choice of fuel will not fix a faulty or badly adjusted fuel system.

Frequently asked questions

Can all outboards run on E10?

No. These approvals apply to the engines specified by the manufacturer. Check older engines, and the tank and hoses in the installation, separately.

Can I use chainsaw alkylate petrol in my boat engine?

Not without checking the specification. Premixed fuel for air-cooled two-strokes may have the wrong oil or mix ratio for an outboard.

Can a fuel stabilizer make bad petrol good again?

Don't count on it. Contaminated or phase-separated fuel needs to be assessed and dealt with, not just treated with an additive.
