Boat insurance: compare price, excess and winter cover

How to compare boat insurance quotes on the same details and check engine damage cover, theft requirements, lifting and winter storage.

Compare the same cover – not just the annual premium

There is no single insurance price for a boat model. Request personal quotes for the same boat, engine, value, use and excess. Then compare what the policy actually covers. A low premium doesn't help if the cover you need is missing or if your winter storage doesn't meet the insurer's terms.

We don't give a made-up typical price. If's own product information shows, among other things, that the chosen excess affects the price and that engine damage cover differs between insurance levels.

Details to have ready

  • Boat make, model, year and current market value.
  • Engine make, model, power output, year of manufacture and serial number.
  • Where the boat is used and how it is stored.
  • Whether you charter the boat out or use it for anything other than private leisure use.
  • Which equipment should be covered and what locks or anti-theft devices are fitted.

Find basic details in the boat catalog and the engine catalog, but confirm the actual installation. Incorrect details, such as the engine year or type of use, can make the comparison misleading. Ask the insurer how to report a changed engine or new equipment.

Excess: lower premium, higher out-of-pocket cost

If states that choosing a higher deductible lowers the insurance premium. At the same time, certain types of claims may carry fixed or special deductibles. So don't just compare the basic deductible you choose: also check what applies to things like engine damage, theft and legal expenses cover.

Ask for alternative quotes and work out how much you could afford to pay yourself if something happens. A discount isn't a saving if it comes from removing important cover. Also check whether the price is an introductory offer or applies for the whole of the next policy period.

Engine damage is not regular engine servicing

If's product information lists engine damage under Stor båtförsäkring (its comprehensive boat insurance) but not in the basic product. It states a maximum engine age of 12 years, counted from the year of manufacture, for the described cover. This is one insurer's example, not an industry rule. Your policy document and terms version determine what applies to you.

Wear, neglected maintenance and unforeseen damage are separate issues. Read the exclusions and keep your service history. Insurance should not be treated as a substitute for scheduled maintenance or as a warranty for an old engine.

Winter, haul-out and theft: read the practical requirements

If describes cover during launch, haul-out, transport and storage, but lock and storage requirements differ between policy levels. Check in particular whether the outboard may stay on the boat outdoors over winter, and what is required for locks, supervision and laying up. Don't assume the yard's insurance automatically replaces yours.

Ask the insurer to confirm your specific storage in writing if anything is unclear. Combine the quote with the cost of winter storage and the lifts. Keep your policy document, terms, photos and engine number somewhere you can reach even if the boat goes missing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does boat insurance cost per year?

Request a personal quote. Boat, engine, value, use, excess and coverage must be the same for prices to be comparable.

Is engine damage always covered?

No. If's basic product as described doesn't include it, while Stor includes age-limited cover. Other insurers and policy periods may have different terms.

Can I cancel my insurance while the boat is ashore?

Don't do it without assessing the risks and the agreement. Theft, fire, storage and lifting may still need cover. Also check the boatyard's requirements.
