Boat engine service: what it costs and what the quote should include

What servicing an outboard or inboard costs in labour in 2026, what drives the price and what the quote should include.

What does an engine service cost in 2026?

An annual service on an outboard costs roughly 1 100 to 3 800 kr in labour including VAT. Oil, filters, other parts and environmental fees come on top. An inboard ends up around 3 200 to 5 100 kr in labour. If the mechanic finds a fault during the service, that is billed separately.

What determines the price

  • Size: a 5 hp engine costs about half as much to service as a 100 hp. Above 200 hp you're approaching 4,000 kr in labour for the annual service.
  • Engine type: a carburettor two-stroke is cheapest, from just over 1,000 kr. A four-stroke has oil and filters to change and takes longer.
  • Which service: the major service after 3 years or 300 hours costs about 700 to 1,000 kr more than the annual service.
  • Inboards and drives: diesels and larger engines such as the Volvo Penta D4/D6 cost the most. Winterising and antifreeze are priced separately.

What should the quote include?

Send the workshop the model and serial number and ask which service programme they follow. A standard four-stroke service usually covers engine oil, oil filter, gear oil, lubrication and a general check. Spark plugs, fuel filter and impeller have their own intervals. Something being looked at doesn't mean it has been replaced.

  • Labour and VAT.
  • Oil, filters, gaskets and other parts.
  • Environmental fee, test run and diagnostic readout if needed.
  • Lifting, transport or delivery.
  • A stamp in the Servicebok and an itemised invoice.

You'll find the manual in the engine catalogue, and the model's service intervals are in a separate guide.

Servicing and winterizing are two different jobs

Winterizing gets the engine ready to sit idle in the cold. Servicing follows the maintenance schedule. Winterizing a mid-sized four-stroke costs about 1 000 kr in labour, and many yards charge less if it's done together with the service. Materials come on top here too. A cheap winterizing price is not an annual service.

Cost out the whole season

Send the same list of jobs to every workshop you ask and have them state what isn't included. Running the boat there or lifting it also costs money. Ask when the engine will be ready and how they will contact you if they find faults. At collection, put the invoice next to the order. Keep the paperwork. You will need it at the next service and when the boat is sold.

Compare quotes item by item

Two yards can charge different prices for the same engine and still do different amounts of work. One might replace the impeller every year, the other every third year. Put the itemised lists side by side before you compare the totals.

Inboards and sterndrives need a separate quote

A cramped engine hatch, the cooling system and the drive affect how many hours the job takes. Ask for one line for the engine and one for the drive, and ask whether bellows, anodes and gear oil are included. The same engine can cost different amounts in two different boats. Choose a yard near the boat, send the engine details and ask for a total price. Tell them to call before they repair anything beyond the service.

Frequently asked questions

Are materials included in the prices?

No. The labour prices above include VAT but exclude materials and the environmental fee.

Is the three-year service the same as the annual service?

No, it's a bigger package. Ask for the list of items and compare it with the manual's schedule for your engine.

Can I service it myself?

Some of it you can do yourself if you follow the manual and record what you've done. Leave anything that needs special tools or diagnostics to the workshop.
